First book: Two Weeks with the Queen Author: Morris Gleitzman Illustrator:Kim Gamble Publisher:Pan Macmillan Aust Pty Ltd Type of book: Childrens Fiction No of Pages: 127 Time taken to read: five days Evaluation: I enjoyed this book. It is a story about a younger brother, Colin, looking after his older brother, Luke, who has cancer. Even though this is a really sad time for the family some funny things happen in the book. It is called "Two weeks with the Queen" because Colin and Luke travel to England with their parents to visit their Aunt and Uncle. While they are there, Colin tries to contact the Queen because he believes she can get help for his sick brother Luke. This story has a happy ending and I would recommend it.
Second book: Don’t Breathe a word Author: Marianne Musgrove Illustration: Cheryl Orsini Publisher: Random house of Australia Type of book: a children’s book No of page:134 Time taken to read: Two Weeks Evaluation:
This story is about two sisters called Mackenzie and Tahlia. Their grandpa is their care giver because their mum and dad have died. At the being of the story Tahlia and Mackenzie make a promise to keep a secret. They don’t want people to know about their grandpa doing strange things because they don’t want him in a home. At first it is easy to keep the secret but then it get harder and harder because Tahlia is out a lot, and Mackenzie and her friend Mahesh are doing all the work. At the end the secret is out and grandpa goes to a home but the girls visit him a lot. This is a great book and I would recommend it.
Third book: Girl Underground Author: Morris Gleitzman Illustrator: Chris salvo Publisher: penguin group (USA) Type of book: a children’s chapter book No of pages: 184 Time taken to read: two weeks Evaluation: This is a story about a girl called Bridget and a boy called Menzies. They both want to free these two kids in a detention centre. Their names are Jamal and Bibi. Jamal has been sending letters to Menzies. One of the letters said that his dad is free but they’re not. Menzies and Bridget make lots of plans to set free Jamal and Bibi. In the end you don’t find out if Jamal and Bibi get out of the detention centre or not. The important thing is that Menzies and Bridget meet Jamal and Bibi and their parents think it’s wrong to keep kids in a detention centre.
Fourth book: The very best of friends Author: Margaret Wild Illustrations: Julie Vivas Publisher: Margaret Hamilton Books Type of book: a children’s book No. of pages: 29 Time taken to read: one day Evaluation: This book is about two people called Jessie and James. They live on a farm and have fifty cattle twenty chickens, four horses, three dogs and one cat called William. William is James’ cat. Jessie thinks cats are silly but Jessie tries to love William as much as James loves William. One morning suddenly James had a heart attack and died. Jessie is sad and cries a lot, she is not very kind to the animals any more. She puts William and his things out side. After a while William gets angry with Jessie because he has been outside for too long. When Jessie goes to put food in William’s bowls he hissed at her and scratched her because she has been so mean to him. Jessie says sorry to him and brings William and his things back into the house. This book is a bit sad but ok in the end.
Fifth book: Whale Mail Author: Gill Davies Illustrator: Jill Newton Publisher: Octopus Publishing Group ltd Type of book: a children book No of pages: 18 Time taken to read: Evaluation: This book is about a whale and a kangaroo. They write letters to each other to learn about how each other lives. Kangaroo learns about whale in the sea and whale learns about kangaroo on dry land. After they read each other letters they keep on sending letters to each other and are friends from now on. This book is a bit short but I like it because you can read the letters and then fold back up.
Sixth book: Are we there yet? Author: Alison Lester Illustrator: Alison Lester Publisher: Penguin Group Type of book: a children book No of pages: 31 Time taken to read: one day Evaluation: This book is about a family who are taking a trip around Australia. I like this book because the family see a lot of tourist places and the illustrations are very good. The title is funny because all kids ask this question when they are in the car on a long trip. Billy asks ‘Are we there yet?’ throughout the book. I was a bit disappointed that it doesn’t show any details about Canberra, even though the family visit it. I would still recommend this book.
